Finden Scientist Leads Milestone Publication of the Battery Imaging Library (BIL)

We are proud to announce that the Battery Imaging Library (BIL) has been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry Digital Discovery.

Spearheaded by Finden’s Research & Development Lead Scientist, Dr Antony Vamvakeros, over the course of his four-year Royal Society Industry Fellowship, BIL represents a landmark milestone for the battery research community: the first curated, open-access, multimodal, and multiscale imaging library dedicated to battery materials.

An Unprecedented Collaborative Scale

Developing a platform of this scope required an extensive international effort. The initiative brings together 48 research scientists across 23 partner institutions spanning the UK, Europe, the United States, and Japan. Key academic, facility, and industry partners include Imperial College London, Diamond Light Source, ESRF – The European Synchrotron, DESY, μ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre (muvis), UCL Chemistry, UCL Chemical Engineering, The Faraday Institution, Thermo Fisher Scientific, The University of Manchester, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, UKBIC, JASRI (SPring-8), National Laboratory of the Rockies, Colorado School of Mines, and WMG. Funding for Dr Antony Vamvakeros’s work was provided by The Royal Society through their Industry Fellowship.

Key Features of the Library:

  • Scale: Currently hosting over 4.5 TB of curated research data, with substantial dataset expansions scheduled regularly.
  • Multimodal Depth: Data encompasses 13 complementary imaging modalities, bridging the atomic scale to macroscopic device architectures:
    • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atom Probe Tomography (APT)
    • 2D and 3D FIB-SEM / EDX / EBSD
    • Laboratory and Synchrotron X-ray micro-CT and nano-CT
    • Advanced scattering and spectroscopic techniques: XRD-CT, S3DXRD, and 3D XANES-CT
    • Neutron-CT

Access the Data and Contribute

By uniting diverse modalities under an open-access framework, BIL provides researchers worldwide with the tools needed to accelerate material discovery and battery diagnostics without redundant beamline or lab measurement overhead.

Finden and the BIL consortium gratefully acknowledge The Royal Society for supporting this research through Dr Vamvakeros’s Industry Fellowship. We actively welcome contributions from the global community. To contribute your datasets, please visit the BIL portal for submission guidelines.
